“And every day while slaves were being slaughtered and carted away across the waves…” -Lyric from “Alexander Hamilton”
To understand slavery during the Founding Era, time needs to be spent addressing the mass forced movement of African people into the American Colonies. Stephanie E. Smallwood discusses in her book Saltwater Slavery: A Middle Passage from Africa to American Diaspora about the process of enslavement—describing the reasons for a shift in the scale of slave trading, outlining the transformation of African captives into Atlantic commodities, and the final turn of becoming enslaved in America. By reviewing the key points of her book, an insight can be gained in the slave trade system and the degradation of human beings into commodities. Alongside the historiography of the slave trade will be activities and references to coloring pages to evoke reflection and understanding.
